Party Storage Hacks

It’s getting to be that time of year when you find yourself hosting parties. There’s Thanksgiving.  And, Friendsgiving.  And, Christmas.  And, New Years.  Suffice it to say that between now and the end of the year, you’re looking at at least another four major events – not including whether or not anyone in your inner circle will be celebrating a birthday or other major life event.  

If you’re like me, you enjoy organizing (if not hosting) many of these glorious events.  I’ll admit, my passion is cooking and baking.  Hosting a party for friends and family fulfills that need.  I’m also a creative individual, so if I can have fun with the décor, it’s a win-win in my book!
Here’s the problem that I oftentimes run into:  My house is on the small side, and there is practically no built-in storage.  Altogether, I believe I have 3.5 closets – 2 of those being in bedrooms, a third narrow closet in the upstairs hallway, and the half closet being more of a linen closet above the access panel for the pipes to the upstairs bathroom.  Needless to say, storage creativity comes in handy.

Also handy?  Pinterest.  (Seriously.  Between recipes and basic home DIY, I practically live on the site.)

I was therefore super happy when I came across a list of “spring” storage hacks.  Although the listed items are for spring storage, there’s no reason I can’t utilize the suggestions for anytime storage.  Right?  Right!

Now, before I jump into this, I realize some of these things are kind of well, duh options when you look at them.  But, if you’re like me, it’s so simple – yet, I’ve never considered some of the storage options until it was literally spelled out in front of me.  

Take silverware storage, for example.  We’ve all been there.  We’ve all purchased plastic utensils in an effort to spare some time and effort on clean-up.  At the end of the day, the unused plasticware gets scooped back up in the box it came from and set aside – either in a drawer, a cabinet, or where else you keep them.  When the next event rolls around, you either forgot you had a box with 8 knives, 4 spoons, and 2 forks – or, you remembered, but realized you need to pick some up anyway so people aren’t trying to stab their food with knives to make up for the lack of forks on hand.  In either scenario, you wind up getting another set of plasticware.  I don’t know about you, but I generally tend to use the new utensils – since they match and since I know just how many of them there are.  But, that means that at the end of the day I now have 2 boxes of mismatched plasticware!  And, the cycle tends to repeat itself until my boxes of mismatched plasticware magically replenishes into a more usable set of utensils – normally something akin to 12 forks, 15 spoons, and 33 knives.  (It always seems that people use less knives.)  The easiest, and I really mean easiest, solution?  Get 3 see-through pencil boxes.  Use one to contain your spoons, another for your knives, and the third for your forks.  When it’s time to restock, you can literally look at them.  Knowing that you have an overstock of knives, you may just need to pick up a small box of spoons (because somehow your forks have balanced out since you last used them) – saving you time, storage space, and money.  Added bonus?  The plastic pencil boxes are helpful if you happen to drop them.  Instead of the plasticware falling out of an open cardboard box, the pencil box keeps them all contained.  It also helps keep them clean while they sit in your cabinet or drawer.  

Plastic storage containers also help for napkins.  That way they’re kept dry, and together.  Added bonus: a plastic container with a lid means you can compact the napkins to save space – something you can’t really do if you keep them in the plastic wrap they usually come in.
Another tip mentioned on the site is one that I have already been utilizing for my baking supplies.  I have a fishing tackle box that holds my icing bags, tips, cake leveler, and a host of other baking necessities.  This works twofold for me.  For starters, everything is nicely in its own place.  Secondly, it is transportable.  The latter helps when I am working on cake deliveries.  I can bring my “repair kit” to touch up any icing issues that may have happened during transit for delivery.
