Right after the holiday, Pittsburgher’s get finished with the tinsel we don the best twinkle out for the New year. It is a night for you to get all dressed up, crack open the bubbly and kiss 2018 good-bye.
The Family Friendly New Years
First Night is a long-standing traditional festival that is fun for all ages. First Night 2019 brings art and music to the Cultural District. This year is the 25th Anniversary of First Night aptly titled “Silver Jubilee”.
First Night 2018 also brings the New Year’s Eve Comedy Showcase featuring Norlex Belma, Mia Jackson and hosted by Day Bracey. The show takes place at the Byham Theater at three times: 7 P.M., 9 P.M. and 10:30 P.M.
The most popular is the music and fireworks. There are a few stages at First Night, however, The Highmark Stage becomes the most popular as midnight grows closer. Beginning at 10:45 P.M., Durand Jones and The Indications followed by The Future of Pittsburgh Grand Finale with the ball being raised to the sky.
Other shows during First Night includes the New Year’s Eve Parade down Penn Ave starting at 8 P.M. and Lee Terbosic will be performing at the O”Reilly Theater for three performances at 6:45 P.M., 8:45 P.M. and 10:15 P.M.
To get into all events during First Night 2018 you will need to purchase a button. Buttons can be purchased at the theater box office (655 Penn Ave) and participating Giant Eagle stores. For a complete list of events for First Night and information visit https://firstnightpgh.trustarts.org.
There is something liberating about celebrating New Year's Eve with your friends or even alone. There is something about watching the “ball drop” with a big bowl of popcorn curled up with the cat, however, what if you can make it a singles night out?
A few years ago I did that. So where do you go and what to do? It probably depends on your age. Some will prefer to go out for a fancy dinner with their friends and some would love a dance club. Both are fun in their own way. Both will have a countdown to midnight and both will have just you and your friends.
If First Night is not your speed we recommend a romantic dinner for two. There are a few restaurants downtown that will be perfect for New Years. One favorite is Eddie Merlots. Conveniently located by Fifth Ave Place it has a perfect view of the Pittsburgh Ball of Light raising above the city. Dinner would around $200 with a bottle of wine, so plan accordingly.
Another great choice is Altius on Mount Washington. They posted a menu consisting of items like an Australian Lamb Rack and Veal Tenderloin. Dessert will include Champagne. The total for the four-course meal is $125. Reservations can be made at 412.904.4442.
No matter what you choose for New Year's Eve please be responsible. Plan accordingly with Lyft or Uber and Transit will still be running on a holiday schedule. Cheers!
