Garden Grows to Build a Community

By Amanda Narcisi

A community is like a community. It takes many to plant and care for it, the roots grow deep, and the same teams that plant will come back to celebrate its growth. Swissvale introduced a new edible garden just for that reason.

The Garden

The garden, located close to The Carrie Furnace, is 100% volunteer build and tended. The first nine beds of the garden house edible plants like vegetables are donated to community food pantries at Union Baptist Church of Swissvale and Living Spirit Ministries.

You can contribute to the garden by volunteering, donating money or purchasing a t-shirt. Visit http://www.swissvalegarden.com for more information. The Swissvale Community Garden is located at 7301 Denniston Ave.

First Visit

The Swissvale community is having its first walk-through on Saturday, July 13th from 11:00AM through 5PM throughout the borough. Following the walk-through, there will be a celebration cook-out at Swissvale Community Garden. This tour gives a unique peek into some of the more beautiful gardens in Swissvale. Proceeds from the day benefit Swissvale Community Garden. The day is presented by Swissvale Community Action Committee which hopes to highlight Swissvale as a great place to live and shop.
